Communities Clean Up Together

Litter can feel like an overwhelming problem. Drive down almost any road, walk along a riverbank, or stroll through a neighborhood park, and chances are you’ll spot it: a crushed can here, a plastic bag there, a pile of fast-food wrappers caught in the weeds. It’s easy to feel like the mess is winning.

But lately, the news tells a different story — and it’s one worth celebrating.

Record Turnout, Record Results

This spring, Louisiana made history. During Love the Boot Week 2026, the state’s largest litter removal and beautification effort, more than 28,000 volunteers showed up across all 64 parishes — donating nearly 78,000 hours of their time and hauling away a record-breaking 566 tons of litter. They also planted over 1,500 trees and refurbished nearly 400 community gardens. That’s not just cleanup — that’s community transformation.

Meanwhile, in New Mexico, Governor Lujan Grisham’s “Breaking Bad Habits” campaign brought together more than 7,100 volunteers for what became the largest organized cleanup event in state history. Over two days in April, participants collected over 60,000 pounds of litter in communities statewide — proving that when leadership and community spirit combine, change happens fast.

Closer to Home, the Same Spirit

Big statewide campaigns aren’t the only story. From Wyckoff, New Jersey’s “Team Up to Tidy Up” day, to Earth Day cleanups at Colorado’s Carter Lake and reservoirs, to ongoing programs like Corpus Christi’s monthly Litter Critter drop-off events — communities of every size are stepping up. Keep Massachusetts Beautiful has already hosted 95 cleanup events in 2026, with more on the calendar every weekend.

Each of these efforts, large and small, is a reminder that litter doesn’t pick itself up. People do.

Why It Matters — and Why It’s Working

Litter isn’t just unsightly. It harms wildlife, pollutes waterways, and degrades the places where we live, work, and play. But the antidote isn’t complicated: it’s people deciding that their community is worth caring for, and then acting on it.

At Pliking, we believe that cleanup is only one piece of the puzzle. Education and prevention are equally vital — because the best piece of litter is the one that never hits the ground. When people understand the real cost of littering, and when communities create a culture of pride and accountability, the results speak for themselves.

The momentum is real. Join it.
