For many years, I was embarrassed to pick up trash, but did it anyways. When I encountered another hiker on the trail, I’d hide my bag of trash behind my back. However, since I started Pliking openly, no one has criticized me, laughed or made faces. Quite the opposite – many, many people have said thank you, and some have joined me in picking up trash or asked if I had an extra bag.
When people observe someone else picking up litter, we are more likely to also clean up, and to dispose of their trash properly. We are social creatures, and strengthening social norms that support disposing of litter properly will contribute to a cleaner planet.
