Sweeping the street keeps him warm at night, William told me as he wrapped black tape around the handle of a new donated broom. “My dad taught me the importance of consequences from our actions, and I realized recently that applies to everything I do,” he explained. He began a one-man campaign to clean neighborhood streets in San Clemente, near the California coast. He collects litter, but also sweeps rocks out of alleys behind homes so that the residents will enjoy quieter, more peaceful surroundings. “We don’t realize it,” he said, “but even small noises tax our brains and lower our energy level.”
I felt inspired after meeting him, and was reminded of why I pick up litter.
